Planning a Corporate Retreat in South Dakota

Planning a Corporate Retreat in South Dakota

Every company that plans an offsite runs into the same problem. The agenda is great, but the logistics get in the way. People stay at a hotel across town, a shuttle runs late, the caterer is a separate vendor, and the evening networking happens somewhere else. By the time everyone is in the same room, half the day is gone.

A self-contained lodge solves that. At Lazy J Sporting Club in Ideal, South Dakota, lodging, meeting space, meals, a bar and outdoor activities are all in one place. Your group never has to leave.

What "Under One Roof" Really Means

Here is what a corporate retreat at Lazy J includes:

  • Lodging. We have 22 rooms in the lodge, which works well for groups of 20 with room to spare (double that if you're sharing rooms).

  • Meeting space. Our Bull Room can be set up classroom style, with a projector and the AV equipment you need to host a full session. It is the same space where our production sales take place, so it is built to handle a crowd.

  • Meals. Chef Adam prepares breakfast, lunch and dinner, with tiered menu options. Catered lunches can be served right in the Bull Room.

  • A bar. The Bull Room has a bar, and the lodge has another. For a group that is sleeping at the lodge, the bar is a few steps from the bedrooms.

  • Activities. Our ten-station sporting clays course is one of our most underused assets for corporate groups, and trap is available too. In hunting season, we can add guided hunts.

You do not have to coordinate outside vendors, book a hotel block or arrange travel between venues. If something comes up, the person who can solve it is already down the hall.

Proof Point: Built to Last

On August 26 and 27, Jorgensen Land & Cattle hosted Built to Last at Lazy J Sporting Club, an event for young producers. It is a good example of how a retreat can use every part of the lodge.

The program was built around a classroom setup in the Bull Room, catered lunches, an open bar, and time on the sporting clays course. The lodge's proximity to the Jorgensen Land & Cattle office also made it easy to include hands-on sessions with cattle, so attendees could learn in a real working environment and never have to travel to and from a hotel.

The bigger goal was connection. Anyone who works in commercial cattle, or in any business, deals with the same daily frustrations. A retreat that puts peers in the same building, with a meal and a drink between sessions, is where people find the group they can call when the day does not go their way. Having the bar four steps from where you sleep makes those conversations easy to start.

Programming for Spouses and Families

One of the most common problems at corporate retreats is what the spouse or partner does while the rest of the group is in sessions. Too often the answer is nothing, or a shuttle ride to an activity across town.

At Lazy J, we build programming for them on the property. Options include:

  • A ladies' night on arrival with unique cocktails

  • IV therapy and an in-house masseuse the next morning

  • Charcuterie and wine tasting classes

  • A paint and sip session

  • Floral arranging classes

  • A sourdough baking class

Because everything happens at the lodge, no one has to ride in a van, wait for a turn at an activity or check in somewhere new. If someone wants to rest in their room between sessions, they can.

Who a Lodge Retreat Fits

A self-contained lodge works well for leadership retreats, sales and team kickoffs, producer education events, trainings, and client or customer appreciation events. Groups of 15 to 20 are a sweet spot, and we are happy to talk through larger or smaller groups. Our team has experience building events around specific goals, including bringing spouses and families along.

How Planning Works

Tell us what you are trying to accomplish and who will be there. Our team will build an itinerary around your agenda, handle the details, and keep you in touch with one point of contact from the first call through the last day. You can see our current options on the Weddings & Events page.
