When Does Pheasant Season Open in South Dakota? 2026 Dates and Limits
Every year, the phone starts ringing with the same question. People want to know when they can get boots on the ground and a dog out front. Here's the short answer, straight from South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks.
Traditional season opens Saturday, October 17, 2026, and runs through January 31, 2027.
The 2026-27 Season Dates
Youth season: September 26 – October 4, 2026
Resident-only season: October 10 – 12, 2026
Traditional (statewide) season: October 17, 2026 – January 31, 2027
Shooting Hours
10 AM Central Time to sunset, statewide, every day of the season. That late start is one of the things we like most about hunting here. There's no scrambling in the dark. You eat a real breakfast, get your gear squared away, talk through the plan, and walk into the first field when the frost is off the grass.
Daily and Possession Limits
Three rooster pheasants per day. Possession limit is 15 roosters during the traditional season, built up three birds at a time. During the youth and resident-only seasons, the possession limit is nine.
Hens stay in the field. Always.
You Don't Have to Wait Until October
South Dakota's private shooting preserve season runs September 1 through March 31, which means the guns come out here a full six weeks before the traditional opener. Preserve hunting also keeps the license side simple, and we handle that paperwork for you along with transportation, gun rentals, and shells.

Dove Season Comes First
Doves are the opening act of the South Dakota bird year, and we're running dove hunts again this fall.
Season: September 1 – November 9, 2026
Shooting hours: 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset
Daily limit: 15 mourning doves
Possession limit: 45
License: small game license plus a South Dakota Migratory Bird Certificate. No federal duck stamp needed. Eurasian collared-doves are open year-round with no limit.
Bring more shells than you think you need. Doves are the best wingshooting practice there is, and a September morning over a sunflower field is a fine way to knock the rust off before the roosters get their turn.
Early Season or Late Season?
Both have their arguments. Early birds hold tighter and the weather is kinder to the guests who'd rather ride than walk. By December the roosters are educated, the cover is thinner, and the birds bunch up — harder hunting, but the kind that makes for good stories at the fire.
